12 Hot New Tablets Hitting the Market

At least that is what competitors and IT folks trying to block the iPad are likely saying after Apple’s stunning launch today. Apple is now sneaking into the business. You know you’ve got trouble when the leading software-as-a-service vendor, Salesforce.com, gets on stage supporting a new Apple product (this spiked Salesforce.com’s stock, which will likely drive other business vendors to endorse the iPad) and the CEO says that’s what he is using. With testimonials that include health care providers – which are typically extremely security-focused – it will be nearly impossible to keep this thing out of your shops now.”

Pithy Title but it relates to security issues and the iPad and Filemaker if you read on.

DADI still stands up

I watched a Webinar on “The Fundamentals of Exceptional Interface Design” this morning for Filemaker experts and found the process extremely similar to the DADI process I use for Filemaker and web projects: Define, Architect, Design, and Implement.

It all stems from the need to Define what is needed before diving into the all-too-fun process of programming. It also comes from the need for the client to understand that they might need something other than what they have conceived. The client will have experience, generally, with one or several databases. The developer has produced dozens of system and offers the breadth and wealth of experience to the client.

In the first step of the process one can define needs and solutions to the task at hand and offer different approaches that depend on the needed outcome. Approaches not thought of by the client can be offered and discussed based on the developer’s repertoire or “bag of tricks.” As somebody once said, “Once begun is well done.” A good beginning or definition phase sometimes makes all the difference.

Filemaker updaters

V3 updaters are now available for FileMaker Pro 11 and FileMaker Pro 11 Advanced.

Here’s what’s been updated in FileMaker Pro 11.0v3

1. File references performance:
• Mac OS X: Improved performance when opening a hosted file that references multiple related files by DNS name rather than an IP address.

2. Printing:
• Mac OS X: Addressed an issue where using printing presets created in another application to print in FileMaker caused the FileMaker print options to disappear the next time you tried to print.
• Addressed an issue with text in a field spanning one or more page breaks being horizontally truncated in printouts, previews, and PDF exports.

3. Send Mail:
• Mac OS X: Addressed an issue where Send Mail did not work with Outlook 2011.
