AppMockup ($1.99; iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) lets you create design layouts or mockups for each screen of an application idea and then ‘run’ (play back) the mockup, with editable icon images and names, text fields for entry, picker wheels, buttons to link to other screens, support for custom design elements, and more.

PaperFinance ($2.99; iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) helps you track your money, with a budgeting screen, spending limits, recurring transfers, pie charts, support for negative balances, PDF export, a ‘full swipe interface,’ and other features.

IT Toolbox ($3.99; iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) provides a set of network troubleshooting utilities usable over Wi-Fi or 3G connections, including ping, nslookup, portscan, traceroute, MAC Search (cross reference of manufacturers to NIC cards), and Port Search (cross reference of port numbers to services).
ShapeEffects ($2.99; iPad) makes it possible to create drawings by using shapes and colors, with features that include rotation, resizing, combining shapes into composite ones, control of fill and border colors and transparency, background colors, and a snapshot function.

CamScanner (Currently $0.99; iPhone 4/3GS) turns the iPhone camera into a scanner, with smart cropping, image enhancement, anti-shake capture, support for multi-page files, tags, search (by title or tag), PDF creation, email, uploads, and other features.

JAniCA Stopwatch ($2.99; iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) is a stopwatch designed for Japanese animation, ‘a digital recreation of the original analog version created in 1993 by Murata Kazuya who at the time worked for STUDIO Ghibli,’ with 24fps and 30fps modes, unlimited records, audible ticks, optional buttonless interface, display of the last 10 records on the clock face, and other features.”

Mobile apps have become an embarrassment of riches. In a world with over 200,000 iPhone apps and over 100,000 Android apps, the toughest part is finding the most useful stuff.

For iPhone users, I’m going to throw you an assist by sharing my top 25. These are third-party apps that can help you be more productive, streamline several of your activities, reduce the number of gadgets in your life, and take advantage of the best benefits that mobile computing has to offer. I’m also going to follow up with similar lists of the best apps for Android and iPad.
