Moving WordPress sites without the database

Recently I completed a project for my dentist who was paying a rather enormous monthly fee for a wordpress website and a blog that wasn’t really needed. When the Host did not want to provide access to the database and cPanel info for an easy transfer, it took a little research to figure out the best way to make it all work.

sitesuckerFortunately, I have worked enough with web programming and databases over the years to take on the challenge. I downloaded a Site Sucker program (actually called SiteSucker from the Apple store and downloaded the entire site, html. images, plugins, everything but the database settings, no longer needed for the to-be-discarded Blog feature.

I used a WordPress form generator (Fast Secure Contact Form) to replace the Request Appointment page and used Adobe Dreamweaver CC 2015 to search and replaced content that needed to be replaced with current info. Next we added new staff photos and replaced a slew of Stock Pix with new art.

It required working at the code level, as do so many web projects, but I felt like that scene in The Matrix where the programmer says –I don’t even see the code anymore, just people here, buildings there. After several days of effort it was finished and live on the Web with great saving to be achieved over time with just enough features needed for a small business. There is a tendency to be oversold by everyone out there, better tires, more insurance, bigger web sites  etc. that are more than is really needed by Return On Investment ROI. Sell, sell. sell. Sometimes enough is enough.

I even managed to plant one of my photos on the front page slider feature. You can guess which one. http://www.infinitydentalcares.com

Updated graphics for Optical Education site

I recently completed a graphic design refresh of an educational Optometry site. It was rather complicated as the site was done in Ruby On Rails, which required embedding all the graphics in Ruby code as well as rewriting the CSS code all by hand. There was some conflict in using Dreamweaver CS4 coding so I did it all in the text editor BBEdit (which just keeps getting better). It is a private site requiring a log in, but I can grab some screen shots for you.
