Review: FileMaker Pro 14 continues to make the best better
by Gary Coyne on June 28, 2015 at 6:21 pm
FileMaker (an Apple subsidiary) recently released version 14 of their award-winning database software that’s been around 30 years (and I should know; I bought the version 1 in 1985). This release is interesting in that while there is a good range of new features, there are a also few updates to some of their core tools. And, like a true geek, the place where this release shines for me is the spectacular update to their scripting. Is it perfect? No, I feel there are several areas where some UI improvements are still needed. Nonetheless, there are new tools, new scripting opportunities, new UI features, and some very powerful server features. So sit back, pick up your beverage of choice, and read all about it.FileMaker Pro is a database software application that lets you create and manage databases. What’s a database? Consider an electronic collection of business cards where you can search for plumbers, plumbers in your state, and/or plumbers that do house calls. A web search engine is a database, but the contents are based on what’s on the web. If you have an organization and you want to look up members of that organization, you need a custom database.

FileMaker 14 review: 30 years old and still innovating
Major improvements to FileMaker’s infrastructure in its last two releases (versions 12 and 13) required a new file format (.fmp12) and sent a lot of developers back to school. FileMaker 14 maintains the existing file format and solidifies some of these earlier advancements (especially in WebDirect) but also keeps the pressure on developers by introducing powerful innovations that affect the design of databases for FileMaker Pro, FileMaker Go, and web browsers.

Filemaker 12
Well it is released at last: Filemaker 12.
I’ve had access to FM12 for some time through my Technet membership. I have now blasted through the new features several times. On the whole it make the apps you build look brilliant through easy-to-use CSS formatting. This Rapid Application Development tool just got faster.
I was once fired from a Kaiser contract position because the layouts created by the principle developer were, shall we say, ugly-on-a-stick. Developers now have no excuse not to create smartly designed Filemaker apps for desktop, iPad and iPhone deployment ( my wife hates the word “deployment” says it sounds like I’m storming the beach at Normandy).
It’s integration with the iPad with Filemaker Go is also brilliant. I have been developing iPad/Filemaker Go apps for UCSF Trauma Center since last year and have posted screenshots of these systems elsewhere: Filmaker Go go go.
. Moving to 12 will make the development process better, faster, deeper, harder, etc.
There is also a fascinating integration/upgrade of Container Fields that allows of movies, interactive media, PDFs, signed documents and more. I’ll be addressing these features in the weeks to come.
Nothing makes a Filemaker Developer happier than a good upgrade, and this one is a winner.
