The howls of protest<\/a> coming from iPhone and iPad developers are loud and shrill, and are sure to grow louder and shriller as their Golden Cage<\/a> grows smaller and smaller<\/a>, as I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m certain it will.<\/p>\n

The Golden Cage is indeed a cage, and a strong one.\u00c2\u00a0 Yet it has no door.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Still the poor imprisoned wretches continue, on their own free will and in battalion strength, to pack subway-rush-hour-tightly into their curious prison.\u00c2\u00a0 I suggest that the jailbirds\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 grievances should lie not with their jailers, but with the outside world, which offers them so little.<\/p>\n

It appears that no one (not PG<\/a>, either) has a grasp of the real problem behind Apple\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s tyranny.\u00c2\u00a0 At any rate, no one is talking about it.\u00c2\u00a0 It is quite true that Apple\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s new App Store policies are exactly the kind of behavior one might expect from a tyrannical monopoly.\u00c2\u00a0 But, having cornered no markets, Apple is not a monopoly.\u00c2\u00a0 Or is it?<\/p>\n

I argue that Apple now has not one but two<\/em> monopolies:<\/p>\n

I)\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 A nearly-total monopoly on computer (and pocket computer) systems designed with good taste<\/strong>.<\/a>
\nII)\u00c2\u00a0 A total monopoly on the Microsoft-free, hassle-free<\/strong> personal computer. [1]<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n
