FileMaker Pro Session 1
Overview of the Parts pre OSX
- When you finish, the installer will create a folder called the FileMaker Pro folder. When you double-click on it, you will see all the supporting files. It has also done something else: go into your System Folder. You will see that there is a folder called Claris that probably was not there before.
- In Filemaker 7/OSX there is a just a folder/directory in your Applications folder
- When you double-click on the Claris folder, you will see FileMaker Pro fonts, dictionary, Quick Help, and other supporting files for other Claris products (ClarisWorks, E-Mailer.) Leave these alone! Everything needed to run FileMaker Pro is automatically installed. More problems happen when people go into this folder, grab something and move it out thinking they are going to save some disk space, and, by doing that, find that certain things will not work.
- Inside your FileMaker Pro folder is your application.
- Other things in the FileMaker Pro folder include the FileMaker Pro tutorial. Do not throw this support file away. It is the computerized version of a hardback book that will allow you to find helpful information on your computer.
- Appearing like a slide show, it gives you detailed information on how to run various parts of FileMaker Pro depending on what module (or mode) you are in. Then we have FileMaker Pro extensions. Absolutely leave these alone. Do nothing with these files! They talk to other files like ClarisWorks and other databases (DOS, Windows, etc.) TCP/IP Network is for Internet-type networking. MacIPX Network is used when you are using cross-platform (Windows to Mac) files linked with the Novell system.
- In the next session we will discuss the FileMaker Pro Examples and FileMaker Pro Templates.
